What Is Mathematical Reasoning?

Mathematical reasoning is the ability to think logically and make sense of math, to use what you know to figure out what you don’t.

It can be as straightforward as knowing the numbers 4 and 6 represent measurable quantities, and when grouping those known quantities, you can figure out the answer to 4+6.

To put it simply, it’s reasoning your way to the answer.

Parents often talk about wanting their children to feel confident with math, but confidence does not start with memorizing addition facts or completing daily worksheets. It begins with number sense, the foundational understanding that numbers have meaning, that they relate to one another, and that they behave in predictable ways. When children develop strong number sense, math becomes less of a mystery and more of a language they understand and use every day.
