Make Your Own Tactile Number Cards
Looking for a simple way to build number recognition with a hands-on twist? Tactile Number Cards invite kids to feel, trace, and name numbers while connecting symbols to quantities. This multisensory activity is quick to prep, easy to reuse, and perfect for centers or at-home practice.

What You’ll Need
- Print a full set of number cards (pages 3–5 of the download).
- Place 1/2 cup of sand into a zip-top bag; add several drops of food coloring. Seal and mix to tint the sand. Repeat to create additional colors.
- Pour each colored sand bag onto its own sheet of paper, spread thinly, and allow to dry overnight.
How to Make the Cards
Build the Texture
- Select a number card and trace the number outline with glue.
- Sprinkle the colored sand over the glue. Tap excess sand onto a paper sheet so you can return it to the pile.
- Allow each card to dry completely, then repeat for the remaining numbers.
Material Variations
Offer a variety of tactile experiences by swapping sand with any of these options:
- Glitter
- Fabric scraps (felt works great)
- Dried beans or rice
- Pipe cleaners
How to Use the Cards
Trace & Name
- Model how to trace the number using the pointer finger of the dominant hand. Encourage proper number formation while saying the number aloud.
- Invite your child to close his eyes and identify a card using only touch. Can he tell which number it is?
Match with Quantities
- Pair each number card with a matching set of objects (for example, the card “5” with five blocks).
- Play a quick “Find the Number” game: mix the cards, call a number, and have your student locate it.
What’s Included
The printable includes number cards 1–9 (pages 3–5) designed for easy cutting and durability.
Teaching Tips
- Start small with 1–5 for beginners; add 6–9 as confidence grows.
- Lamination is optional; if you prefer more texture, leave the cards unlaminated once fully dry.
- Store extra colored sand in labeled bags for simple touch-ups.
Extend the Learning
- Shuffle the cards and place them face up. Call a number for your child to race to touch.
- Flip a number card, then have your child build the matching quantity with counters (blocks, buttons, snacks).
- Use the cards as a model for handwriting: trace with a finger first, then write the number on paper or in a salt tray.
