When my daughter was four I started teacher her how to read, but didn't really have a plan or curriculum in place and felt like I was floundering. My son wasn't homeschooled until third grade and already knew how to read, so I knew I needed to find a program that made sense for me and my daughter. I found AAR after a friend mentioned using the SWR curriculum. Before homeschooling, I was a school psychologist for 8 years, and after reading reviews, I was completely intimidated by SWR and the training needed to implement it. Thank God I found a blog about AAR and how much more user friendly it was than SWR. I am an open-the-book-and-go kind of gal...I like everything spelled out for me and I don't want to be running to the library every week to reserve books and downloading and printing a ton of reproducibles. I adore that AAR has EVERYTHING you need in one package. I can prep several days ahead in about fifteen minutes, stick my post-it tab on the page we left off in my teachers manual, and each day I'm good to go. My Kindergartner loved Level 1 and has been begging to me to buy Level 2, which I just did. We could have moved so much faster and I could easily see someone moving through Level 1 and 2 in a years time with a child who is motivated to read. My daughter is so proud of the reading she can do and loves reading to others. The stories are cute and silly and much more engaging that so many of the beginning readers that are out there. The activity pages were creative and game-like, and also allowed for her to color a bit, which she loved. There are lots of practice and review pages of newly learned rules/patterns (we didn't always do all of these if I felt she had mastered a skill). Using AAR made me more confident in my teaching skills, gave us a clear focused plan for the year, and most importantly turned my five-year old into a confident beginning reader! She's tackling one-syllable words with consonant blends in the beginning and end, compound words, and two syllable words with -ing and -ed endings. I can't wait to use it with my youngest son when he's ready to learn how to read!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! My homeschooled 2nd grader was struggling with reading throughout first grade. We were using another curriculum that just wasn't cutting it for his learning style. My son and husband are both dyslexic so my husband was completely on board with finding a curriculum that worked to get our little guy comfortable and happy learning how to read.
We are two-thirds the way through Level 1 and my son enjoys our reading lessons, LOVES the workbook activities/games and asks to read the stories from the reader over and over. This is a COMPLETE different reaction to the other approach. My husband, with plenty of learning frustrations and hindsight from his experience, praises the All About Reading Approach. As an adult with dyslexia, he sees all the benefits with this step by step, hands-on approach from that perspective. My sister-in-law who is a Speech Therapist in a local school district is also recommending this approach to her students who are struggling with reading because of our great experience.
I taught music in public school for 10 years prior to homeschooling. I have seen a lot of curriculum and methods in the various schools I worked in over the years. All About Reading is just awesome! Thank you!

My 9 year old son began All About Reading Level 1 in the summer. We've tried many other programs for the last 3 to 4 years, and he still ended up after them with a not very strong grasp of vowel sounds, letter reversal issues, and just a general poor confidence level. He's been assessed for an IEP due to slow processing speeds, and it was clear we needed to change our approach somehow.
PROS: He already knew most of his letters and sounds, so starting at Level One made him feel like he really knew a lot. I loved the hand gestures that are used with the vowel sounds -- so much easier and less stressful to remind him by doing the gesture than by speaking. The section on how to learn b/d was vital! He knows the difference after only a few weeks of trying, and this one issue we have had for the last 3 years! He loves puppets, and so I ordered Ziggy the Zebra puppet separately (he goes with the preschool program) and he loves doing lessons and games with one of his puppets and Ziggy (Ziggy has trouble with b/d so my son gets to correct him a lot) My other children are older and fluent readers, so that way there's someone to play games with that also is learning the same things and it is fun as well. Most sections take about 30 minutes. I love the feedback, and the tips in the teachers book, and having all of the lessons and topics laid out before hand. The three hard cover books that they read short stories of have the most amazing illustrations and are interesting besides - much nicer than the flimsy easy readers that are his level .
THINGS TO BE AWARE OF: The fluency sheets can be a bit overwhelming (pages of word lists for them to read) but we split them up - or the puppet Ziggy reads half of the words, but makes mistakes, so my son has to read along to make sure he's doing a good job - and we usually spread them over the lessons where he is reading a story too. It is hard to find outside books to read that cover only the same lessons, but that will get easier as he goes up in levels. As in any reading program, consistancy is key. I've really focused on doing something every day - even if we are only able to review word cards, or do part of a fluency sheet. When we have to skip a day I can tell that both his attitude and his recall take a step backward. It isn't magical -- he still would prefer not to do reading, but he can see the progress he is making and that encourages him to try even on the boring hard things . . . . Some of the games are a little young for him, but we just skip those, or use one of our games to review word cards with . . .
BOTTOM LINE: Get a level, try it out . . . it can't hurt, and might be a blessing! I have no regrets!

My son seems to have turned a corner in this. Since starting our homeschool journey last year, he has resisted reading and writing lessons. We switched curriculum and things improved, but he still balked, especially those fluency pages. I would just have him do a few or break up the lesson so that would be the only thing we needed to do to finish.
We are now half way through Level One, and he love the consonant blends. He wanted to the whole fluency sheet yesterday; it blew my mind. I really love your program and the continuing online support and communication. The design, the structure, the activies, and story books really keep it interesting and simple. I want to mention that my son is older. We delayed former reading instruction on purpose, but we are great readers so his vocabulary is huge. Some beginning reading books are too primitive. Your stories are simple, but still engage his interest (probably because you use lots of critters).

I just wanted to thank you for your reading program. My 7-year-old son has had trouble learning to read. He's felt stupid and behind. I tried other programs (which worked for his big sister), but nothing worked. After reading your story, I decided to try AAR level 1, and kept the shipping box ready to return it. After just 5 lessons, he's reading words he used to laboriously sound out. And when a lesson ends, he says, "Is that it?" and grabs a file folder game to continue the fun. Thank you for giving him (and me) his confidence back! P.S. I threw away the shipping box - this is a keeper!

My daughter has been using All About Reading since she was 3-years-old. She was interested in reading so we got pre-level 1 and took our time going through it and she finished at 5-years-old. We moved on to Level 1 and she was immediately confident in reading. A month ago we started a small co-op using All About Reading Level 1 and Adventures in Reading with Ziggy Zebra. The kids are loving this time. The parents have reported amazing results in reading confidence and fluency. Thanks so much for your program!

As a former kindergarten teacher, I know how difficult it can be to teach kids to read, so I assumed I’d follow the same progression with my own children. After starting AAR Level I with my son, I was absolutely stunned by how quickly and efficiently he learned to read! I L.O.V.E. this program!

When we started All About Reading level 1 this past fall, my son couldn’t read at all. In just 6 months, he is reading 3 years beyond his grade level. My husband and I have been so pleased with the curriculum. We are going to start AAS next.

I have to let you know what a wonderful reading program All About Reading is. I have two children in the Level 1 program and both are moving ahead with confidence. Like many others, my son was struggling with reading ~ too many tears! My daughter had been previously in another reading program but I just wasn't satisfied. She flew through Level 1 in a few months. I decided to give All About Learning Press a try. I'm glad I did. I just handed my first certificate to my daughter, who is moving on to the next level!! So happy .... and the reading books! They are so geared for kids! My kids love them! Love the pictures, as well. Thank you!

I want to tell you that All About Reading has been a blessing for my son. He is slightly dyslexic and has a disability with memory taking him longer than the average child to learn. He is in the bottom 5% among other children his grade for reading. But his new online teacher in the Florida Virtual School even asked what program outside of school was I using because he has had gradual improvement every two weeks that she tests him during a live lesson online. I have seen an improvement in self confidence and of course his reading has improved. I have to inform you his dyslexia is improving greatly! I only see a few words occasionally that are read backwards. I will definitely continue till he completes the entire program. He is getting ready to advance to level 2. I cant tell enough mothers with young children to start your program before they start school and continue throughout the entire program. A retired school teacher who is a tutor for afterschool children is also very impressed with my son's improvement and will be using the program for any of her students who are struggling with reading and/or spelling.

I just wanted to take a minute to tell you what I thought. For so long I have struggled to get my daughter to understand how to sound out words. She was memorizing sight words and they all disappeared. I knew that her reading was struggling. We just finished lesson 3 and I can see a BIG difference. My daughter is now sounding out words. She actually grasped the concept. I see her little face light up as she says I did it. She is getting more self esteem and feeling positive about reading. The spelling we have is phonetic and until we get past this level of reading I put it on the back burner. I am absolutely grateful for this reading program. I now have the confidence that she is going to read in no time. Every day I am more proud of her with how hard she is working on her reading. It's a wonderful program and it really is helping my daughter. Again Thank you so much!

I have a 9 year old with Down syndrome who should be in 3rd grade, however, I realized she wasn't learning a lot in our public school system, so this year we are homeschooling. I am concentrating on reading and I have LOVED the All About Learning level 1 curriculum. We had to get Level 1 to go back to the basics. I am having to tweak it a little (we do it all except the fluency sheets because all those words overwhelm her). We spend more days on going over the word cards then the program calls for. It is the only program I have found that she gets and seems to like. I will stick with this curriculum!! Thanks for making something for our special kiddos!

My daughter is in Grade 1 through homeschooling. We have struggled a lot this year with reading and she was becoming very frustrated and tired. At Christmas we decided to invest the money in a new curriculum. She was showing signs of dyslexia and so I needed a curriculum that helped with the dyslexia. After 3 months she is reading fluently and with confidence. This program is easy, repetitive through different activities. Not very much prep for the teacher (which is great for a busy mom). I wish we had started with this curriculum. This program is amazing and I can't wait to move on to Level 2.

My daughter and I have really been struggling though our first year homeschooling in the reading area. She's been so frustrated and feeling defeated at every turn. And thus putting a damper on the rest of our experience. We just purchased All About Reading level one, and after we have used it this week I must say it was just such a joy to watch my little one be excited and laugh during lessons!! This program is wonderful and she's already in one week leaps from where she was previous! We will definitely be continuing our use of all about learning. Thanks for being wonderful!

What a transformation I have seen in my 7-year old son with just a few months of using AAR! Last year, he hated reading and I tried three different curriculums trying to figure out how to make reading click for him. More than anything, I wanted him to experience the joy of reading! Then I found out about AAR and figured I had nothing to lose. What a total transformation! My son loves the readers, the cute activities, the tiles and magnetic board, and especially his zebra puppet, Ziggy (which we ordered from this website). Every day Ziggy comes out to help him learn to read and it has made such a difference. We are currently finishing up Level 1 and will start Level 2 soon. I love the simple lessons, no prep time, and the fact that we can go at my son's pace. No stress, no tears! Thank you so much for creating such a fantastic program.

I have a young autistic son who has struggled beyond words!!!! AAR was an amazing way for him to learn to read! It covered such diverse ways for him to learn (hearing the cd, touching the tiles, visual of the cards, fun games...). The lessons were simple, quick, and he could accomplish them and felt PROUD!! Thank you AAR for the confidence your program is helping to build in my son.

Just wanted to say thank you for developing this amazing program. It has taken a great deal of tears out of our Dyslexia world. Other than Math we are still working through some issues there. Has made home schooling fun again.

Hi All about Learning
I just wanted to take a moment and thank you all for the work you have put into All about Reading. My daughter is 9 and is dyslexic. Reading, spelling and letters have been a constant struggle and she has never been able to read. Last year half way through the year I simply stopped trying to do any "learn to read" program with her because I had tried so many and each one left her frustrated and me in tears wondering why on earth I couldn't teach my child to read. (She's also a middle child and I had successfully taught both her older sister and younger brother to read with no problem) So we took a break from all the reading programs and I simply read out loud to her for months and months and we fell back in love with reading together out loud. It was during this time that we found out she was dyslexic and then I started digging into reading programs specifically for children who were dyslexic.
By the grace of God I found All about Reading and after much prayer I bought it. I remember getting the All about Reading 1 box in the mail, opening it up and looking at the material and thinking "there is no way she is ever going to be able to read this" (call me a pessimist but I didn't think she could)
We started the curriculum and to my amazement it clicked with my daughter. The All About Reading curriculum is broken down so simple and so easy to use that my daughter, for the first time, was able to start reading words! The fun games and activities keep her having so much fun, that I think she forgets she is learning to read and she loves the stories in the books so much.
We started the All About Reading 1 set in September and my daughter has devoured it. I ordered the All About Reading Set 2 right before Christmas and opened it up today to start with her. As I pulled out the books for this second set I couldn't help but cry. I remember how discouraged I was at the beginning of this year, frustrated that I couldn't help my daughter read and feeling completely hopeless. I have watched my daughters confidence soar in ways I never could have imagined. And the best part - today as we were talking about New Years and goals we were going to set for ourselves my daughter said "my goal is to be the BEST reader ever!"
So from the bottom of my heart I just want to say thank you! I'm sure it is easy to get lost in the work and forget how many kids you are helping read but I just want you to know there is one happy confident dyslexic 9 year old reading girl in my house and it is all because of your curriculum! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope you have a great 2014 and we look forward to buying ALL of the All about Reading Sets!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! A million times thank you! My dyslexic, reluctant, 8 year old who reads on a Kindergarten level and HATES reading anything just read 80 pages of Run Bug Run to me in 15 minutes and begged to read more. I love your program and what it does for my kids.
I actually use AAR and AAS for 2 of my 3 boys, both dyslexic. One is 12 and the other is 8. I have seen huge improvements in both. We have tried tons of phonics programs and just kept hitting that brick wall. I had nearly given up hope of ever finding a program that would work, but your program has been the answer to my prayers. Well worth every penny to hear my baby read.

I have an eight-year old boy. He has dyslexia and slow learning disabilities including short term memory issues. He has an official diagnosis of Noonan's Syndrome, which is a chromosome defect. We have been working on the building blocks to reading for four years now. I was tired and frustrated at seeing how difficult it was to teach my son to read. I have been looking for help and a good curriculum for a long time. I wanted something that completely spelled out the lesson for me. I received my order Friday of last week and set it up to start Monday of this week. We have just finished our first week and it has been amazing. God has certainly done an amazing job at giving you the skills to put this curriculum together. I was amazed to see how well of a foundation I had already given him, which helped boost my confidence and then to see him excel just in one week. We read the two stories today and he did so well! My husband and I just wanted to let you know how well this has worked for us!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I cannot speak highly enough about AAR. We just received this program last week and my son is already showing more interest in reading than he has the past 7 months of us homeschooling (we've completed lessons 1 and 2). He's a typical 6-year-old boy, very active, and it's hard to get him to sit down and focus on school. AAR really holds his attention and has made reading interesting to him.

I just wanted to say thanks for the level 1 readers! I have looked at lots of the "little book" type of easy readers. A lot of them barely have stories and frankly a lot of the pictures are kind of ...ugly. They are not where I want to begin a literate centered curriculum. As far as I am concerned the best part of AAR is that they readers are pretty and the stories are sweet and my little girl relates to most of the stories. She narrated the story about the boy making a mess of pancakes and cleaning up to dad because she knows all about how much mom likes the kitchen cleaned up from too much help! And then they went out to make mud milk - some of which ended up on little brother's head. Thanks for some decodable readers that I can feel good about starting my children on. I recommend the readers to everyone I know, no matter what phonics program they are using.

Wow, I am so thankful for your curriculum. We have tried 2 different other programs and my child was struggling. I was struggling as his teacher. He knew his letters but that leap to having them form words was not happening. We started with level 1 all about reading. After 3 lessons he is reading some of our easier books. And not only is he reading when we got done last night he was begging to read more. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!

I just wanted to write to thank you for creating the AAR program. I have a reluctant reader who used to cry through our reading sessions using a curriculum that had been very effective with my older daughter. (I cried on more than one occasion, too.) When I switched to AAR, Level 1, she started looking forward to the crafts that accompanied the lessons; eventually, she started looking forward to the reading, too. We just finished Level 1 today, and she begged to start Level 2 tomorrow.
As a former high school English teacher, I recognize how essential a solid foundation in reading is. Thank you for offering this for my reluctant reader!

I just finished AAR 1 with my 3rd grade daughter. It is by far the best reading program I've ever used with any of my kids - too bad I discovered it on my last child!

I just wanted to take a minute to thank you. After 3 weeks of first grade with another English/reading curriculum I put it aside and bought All About Reading. In 4 days, 4DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!! We were reading independently!! I can not begin to show my appreciation for your program!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My SON LOVES the AAS and AAR. He flew thru Level 1- not sure if it's the one-on-one with me, Ziggy we add in, or the well-written lessons.... we love it. He was reading, but now he sees patterns in words, ending rhymes, things like why Christmas has a /k/ sound... etc. So many things... he is asleep in bed with magazines and books all over his bed.
I just HAD to tell [everyone at our convention] how wonderful it all is! No gimmick. No slick phrasing. Easy to use. Easy to see growth. Easy to transition with full comprehension - all the graphophonemics, semantics, and syntactic understanding ---- it works.

So far I am really enjoying this program! It is my third attempt to get my son (7) more interested in reading. We've tried [two other popular programs]; this program is the best organized and LEAST overwhelming (to me) so far! We also started using your spelling program last year and Love it! Very comprehensive. I love the way you lay the lessons out so thoroughly for me!
Thank you! :)

We are using Level 1 and we just completed Lesson 4 last night. We are using AAR1 as an afterschooling lesson, each night and then I read The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne to all four our kids.
My 7 year old, ADHD, dyslexia, speech disorder, held back one year in school and in resources classes for reading and speech- is excelling so far.
He is ENGAGED.
He is EXCITED to do his reading lesson.
He is EAGER to read the readers and to do well.
I held my breath as he did his 2nd fluency practice sheet, he had to sound out a few words but he got so many quickly due to the review built in. I told him, finish this sheet and your next lesson you can start reading in the reader book. He finished with pride!
Thank you so very much!!! I've spent the last 2 years trying so hard with him to read the readers the school sent home and both of us getting frustrated.
He loves the letter tiles, especially when we start making words. He loves the flashcard review, we have even had his 6 year old step-sister join in to do a 'challenge' of how fast they can go. The activity book is great with the different activities- he absolutely loved feeding the monster words!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the open and go teacher's manual! I sometimes work until 7:15 and get home at 7:30pm. I can come home, do our lesson and read aloud to the kids in time to put them to bed on time.
So from the bottom of my heart- thank you for this program and I know for the first time in the last two years we are actually making true progress!

Last year I bought AAR pre reading with Ziggy for our 5th child when I saw it come up on the website. I bought it immediately! I didn't even think about it! The success that I had with AAS Level 1 [for my older children] was the clincher.
My youngest loved AAR pre reading and Ziggy and now is loving AAR Level 1. It s her favourite subject and begs to start each day with Ziggy and AAR level 1. The success we are having in our home with your curriculum is amazing. We love AAR!!

Just wanted to say thank you. I placed on order about two weeks ago and I have to say that I was very impressed with your quick delivery time. My daughter was not excited with the [previous] materials I was using for Reading, but when All About Reading came in the mail, reading was the best thing in the world to her. She loves reading her books to her younger siblings and absolutely loves the program. Thank you for taking the time to create a product that really involves all the aspects of learning and making it fun all at the same time. We look forward to Reading Time now!

All About Reading, Level 1 is a homeschooler's Holy Grail when it comes to teaching reading. One area homeschooling parents are constantly concerned with is teaching a child how to read. The process of teaching can be long and difficult or so we have all been told. It is what we prepare for so when the process is arduous we rarely seek an alternative. If you thought teaching reading was anything but a privilege then you could be using the wrong program. I have a student who is difficult to teach reading and she is excelling. She is having fun and asks to do All About Reading, Level 1. The program is so easy to use and delightful I thought for sure I would need to supplement but I was wrong. Today she read a Dr. Seuss book and I was thrilled. I wish I had this program when my oldest was struggling to read.

I ordered AAR pre-level last year and my then 5 yo and 3 yo had a blast with it. We are still going through AAR pre-level with my almost 4yo, but have now picked up AAR level one. It is a perfect blend of all the different approaches for me. It has just enough hands-on, but not too much. I also like the review type sheet that allows the student to practice reading the words worked on in the last few lessons. I love the readers too! They are cute little stories without being hoaky, or too simple for my daughter. I can't wait to go through this whole program with my younger son as well!

I have tried so many phonics programs over the last 3-4 years that I've lost count. My oldest son still struggles with reading (although we are using AAS--on level 2 now--and it's definitely helping him immensely!) and I didn't want my next son to struggle so much. We tried 2 of the same programs that I had lying around and they just weren't working. He has been doing AAS1 for about a month, and he's doing well with it, so I decided to take the $$ plunge and buy AAR1. We've done 3 lessons and already I am amazed! This child is reading words with minimal effort! We have been working on blending for months with our old program and the words just weren't coming. Yet, after just the first lesson, he was reading words like "mat" and "Sam" so easily! And he's having so much fun, too (the space ice cream really helped! . Thank you so much Marie for writing this wonderful program! And thank you for a great staff that is so helpful! My only wish is that you had the other steps already so that I could help my struggling reader!

All About Reading has brought the fun to our phonics program. My son doesn’t even realize he’s learning to read when we work with All About Reading. The lessons are well laid out, which means there is minimal prep on my part, making it truly open and go. There are times where I’m having so much fun I forget it’s school time.

Both of my daughters really love the games and activities. They are creative and fun, and a great way for kids to learn without really feeling like they're learning. The monster game is a huge favorite. The games are fun enough that they could easily be played again and again if your child needed a bit of extra review before moving on. We're so excited to go through level 1 together, and we'll be looking forward to level 2 when it is released.

My DD (7 yrs and a 1st grader) has strabismus, one of her eyes crosses to the center, causing her to see double without her eye patch. Looking at small text for longer than a few minutes causes frustration which is what has been happening with the reading program we were using until we started ARR 1. The text size on the Fluency Practice and on the letter tiles are big enough for her to read easily.
The lessons she has mastered so far have been review but we will be headed into new territory soon. We are currently using All About Spelling Level 1 so she is very familiar with the letter tiles and how to use them, so adding AAR 1 to our day was a snap. The Monster from Lesson 3 is used over and over. DD loves feeding him. I have to make new bones from to him to eat because the ones he currently eats have been mastered.

The layout of the lessons in All About Reading Level 1 make this reading program a teacher's dream come true. You will love the step-by-step directions, hands-on components to bring the reading process alive with your child, and the added benefit of knowing you CAN teach your child to read and have fun along the way. Whether you have a child who is a beginning reader of one who is a reluctant reader, the All About Reading Level 1 program is a wonderful tool to help in the in the reading process.

We absolutely adore All About Reading in this house. My 8 year old son struggled so much before this program. His self esteem had crashed and he would cry when we pulled out a book. He knew all his letter sounds and we had tried 3 different phonics programs with no success. He would just reach a certain point and then break down into tears.
When AAR Pre-1 came out I struggled with whether or not it was too young for him. Not so. He fell in love with Ziggy and the match games. We worked through the program at a consistent pace and saw marked improvement. He learned something new in reading everyday. Those Big Five Skills were so important and he just had not gotten them from the other programs. By the time we finished the Level Pre-1 program, his self esteem had jumped tremendously.
Now my son is progressing nicely through AAR 1, and I predict he will be caught up by the end of the school year. It was a seamless transition from the Pre-1 program, and he was very excited. He was just missing some pieces to the reading puzzle.
This program is so much fun, and he even told his father over the weekend that he loves school now and wants to do reading everyday. We are so thankful for AAS and AAR and will continue to use them for years. Marie has done an excellent and thorough job. The products are very high quality and have such charm to them. My favorite part is they are open and go. Everything I need is right there in the kit. Plus, I can use the same letter tiles with AAS and both programs work together. It relieves any stress I may have about teaching reading instead of adding to it. Their customer service rivals any homeschooling company on the market. They are hands down the best!

I've used AAS for 3 years and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of AAR 1 for my 5yo daughter. I must say, I'm so glad I waited for it and didn't choose an alternate. We're now on Lesson 6 and I'm so impressed with many features. For us, the activities have been just right for my dd. They are short and fun. I like the word and phonics reviews at the beginning of each lesson via flashcards. I have seen my dd get faster and faster reading the words. I like the fact that we're not spending loads of time on reading lessons, yet my dd is progressing and enjoying it. We just finished our first story in the first reader and my dd insisted on standing in front of the room and reading (performing) the first story, bowing at the end. I love to see her enjoying the process of learning to read. I highly recommend this program!
