Tests can\u2019t tell a child how or even what he needs to improve. Tests penalize our most creative thinkers. And our world needs all the creative problem solvers it can get.<\/p><!--more-->\r\n\r\n<p>So when I get an email or phone call from a parent whose child has scored poorly on a standardized test, my immediate hope is that the child hasn\u2019t taken the test scores to heart.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That's because I've <span class=\"italic\">seen <\/span>what can happen when a child takes a test score too seriously. The shoulders that slouch in defeat. The voice that shakes with embarrassment. The sad eyes that let you know your child feels he\u2019s let you down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"italic\">Ugh<\/span>. It makes me want to stomp my foot and tell the child, \u201c<span class=\"italic; bold\">It just doesn't matter. For example:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n    <li>A test can\u2019t measure the <span class=\"bold\">compassion<\/span> that shines in the eyes of a child caring for a chick that has fallen from its nest.<\/li>\r\n    <li>A test can\u2019t measure the <span class=\"bold\">generosity<\/span> shown by a boy who gives his birthday money to the homeless man on the corner.<\/li>\r\n    <li>A test can\u2019t measure the <span class=\"bold\">creativity<\/span> that has been poured into every priceless piece of artwork that hangs on the refrigerator.<\/li>\r\n    <li>A test can\u2019t measure the <span class=\"bold\">joy<\/span> a little girl feels while slow dancing on her daddy's feet in the living room after dinner.<\/li>\r\n    <li>A test can\u2019t measure the <span class=\"bold\">determination<\/span> it takes for a child with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/category\/dyslexia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dyslexia<\/a> to complete just one reading assignment.<\/li>\r\n    <li>A test can\u2019t measure the <span class=\"bold\">love<\/span> that is wrapped up in the warmth of a child's embrace.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p>Children everywhere deserve to know this:<span class=\"italic\"> You are NOT your test score.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"bold\">You are so much more.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>More Things Tests Can\u2019t Measure<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"box\">\r\n<h3>Our readers shared a few more qualities that tests can't measure:<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n    <li>Tests can't measure imagination.
