Everyone loves looking at a beautiful flower garden. Even cute little critters love flower gardens, but for a different reason. Beautiful flowers make a yummy snack!<\/p>

Save the flowers!<\/p>

In this charming free activity<\/a>, your student can prevent the flowers from being nibbled on by deer, chipmunks, birds, and other cute critters. With each correctly spelled word, your child can save a flower bouquet by slipping the pot inside the garden gate, or keeping an animal outside the gate where the flowers can be viewed but not chewed.<\/p>

The Garden Gate - A fun, flowery spelling activity<\/h2>

You like beautiful flowers, right? I know I do. Do you know who else likes beautiful flowers? A lot of animals, including deer, chipmunks, birds, and others. But they don\u2019t like to just look at them, do they? They like to eat them<\/span>! Yikes!<\/p>

We have to get our flowers behind the garden gate where our hungry friends can\u2019t get to them. Every time you spell one of your review words correctly, you get to save the flowers by slipping the card through the garden gate and into the garden. No flower-munching critters are allowed in the garden, though, right?<\/p>

Are you ready to save our flowers so we have a beautiful flower garden to look at? Great! Let\u2019s start spelling and saving our lovely flowers!<\/p>

Instructions for The Garden Gate activity<\/h2>

Prepare the activity<\/h3>
  1. Print The Garden Gate scene.<\/li>
  2. Cut along the cut lines so the gate can open.<\/li>
  3. Print the flower-pot and animal cards and the spelling cards. (Print the pages back-to-back or tape or glue the pages together.)<\/li><\/ol>

    Instructions for Spelling Practice<\/h3>
    1. For any level of All About Spelling<\/a><\/cite>, print pages 3-6<\/li>
    2. Cut the cards apart and place them in a pile with the illustrations facing down.<\/li>
    3. Have your child select a card. Dictate a word from your child\u2019s current lesson of All About Spelling<\/cite> (or a review word) and have her write the word on the blank line. If she spells it correctly, have her turn the card over to reveal either a flower pot or an animal. If the card has flowers, your child can slide it through the gate into the garden. If the card has an animal, it has to stay outside the gate, away from the flowers!<\/li>
    4. Continue selecting cards until all of the flowers are safely in the garden.<\/li><\/ol>
