You know that dogs bark and cats meow\u2014but have you ever wondered how these words came to be? Say bark<\/span> and meow<\/span> out loud\u2014do you notice anything interesting? That\u2019s right\u2014they sound like what they mean!<\/p>\r\n\r\n

When a word sounds like or imitates the thing it describes, it is called onomatopoeia<\/span> (\u014fn\u2013\u014d\u2013mah\u2013t\u014d\u2013p\u0113\u2013uh).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Here\u2019s one to try with your student: \"What sound does food cooking in a frying pan make? Did you make a hissing sound with lots of s<\/u>\u2019s and z<\/u>\u2019s? That\u2019s because the food sizzles!\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Onomatopoeia is more common than you might think, and we teach it beginning in Level 1 of the All About Reading<\/cite><\/a> program. In fact, English contains so many of these words that it can be easy to overlook that everyday words like splash<\/span>, knock<\/span>, buzz<\/span>, and clap<\/span> are all examples of onomatopoeia.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

How Do We Teach Onomatopoeia?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

Onomatopoeia can be a lot of fun, but it can also be tricky for students to read these words if they're not familiar with them.
