Say <span class=\"italic\">bark<\/span> and <span class=\"italic\">meow<\/span> out loud\u2014do you notice anything interesting? That\u2019s right\u2014they sound like what they mean!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>When a word sounds like or imitates the thing it describes, it is called <span class=\"italic\">onomatopoeia<\/span> (\u014fn\u2013\u014d\u2013mah\u2013t\u014d\u2013p\u0113\u2013uh).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n\r\n<p>Here\u2019s one to try with your student: \"What sound does food cooking in a frying pan make? Did you make a hissing sound with lots of <u>s<\/u>\u2019s and <u>z<\/u>\u2019s? That\u2019s because the food sizzles!\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Onomatopoeia is more common than you might think, and we teach it beginning in Level 1 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutlearningpress.com\/all-about-reading\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><cite>All About Reading<\/cite><\/a> program.
