A portmanteau<\/span> (p\u00f4rt-m\u0103n\u02b9-t\u014d) is a word that is created when the sounds and meanings of two different words are blended into one. For example, spork<\/span> comes from a mash-up of spoon<\/span> and fork<\/span>. The word portmanteau<\/span> itself comes from the French words for porter<\/span> (which means to carry<\/span>) and manteau<\/span>, which means mantle<\/span>, or coat<\/span>.
