That\u2019s why the <cite>All About Reading<\/cite> program includes such a wide variety of activities, games, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/decodable-books\/\" title=\"Decodable Stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decodable stories<\/a>. But sometimes things don\u2019t go perfectly according to plan!<\/p><!--more-->\t\t\r\n\r\n<p>Learning to read can be hard work! Many kids see this as a fun challenge, but some kids just get discouraged.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>So what do you do if your child hits a roadblock and suddenly <span class=\"italic\">doesn\u2019t<\/span> enjoy reading the short stories?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>This post will give you lots of solid ideas to get your child back on track\u2014and enjoying reading again. Let's dig in!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Determine What Is Making the Stories Difficult for Your Child<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The first step is to get to the root of the problem. Ask yourself these questions:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n    <li>Is your child working in the correct level? (Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutlearningpress.com\/placement\/\" title=\"Placement Tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">placement tests<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutlearningpress.com\/contact-us\/\" title=\"Contact Us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact us<\/a> for placement help.)<\/li>\r\n    <li>Have you been moving through the lessons too quickly? (If so, back up a few lessons and slow the pace.)<\/li>\r\n    <li>Is your child guessing at words instead of decoding? (If so, start with the tips in this article on <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/break-the-word-guessing-habit\/\" title=\"Break the Word-Guessing Habit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breaking the Word Guessing Habit<\/a>.)<\/li>\r\n    <li>Have you been following the lesson plans as written? (If not, strongly consider including each lesson component without skipping any. Each element is important.)<\/li>\r\n    <li>Does your child have vision problems? (Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/Signs-of-a-Vision-Problem.pdf\" title=\"Signs of a Vision Problem\">signs of vision problems<\/a> in children.)<\/li>\r\n    <li>Is your child actually making good progress, but the stories just seem harder or longer than he would like? Does he have a short attention span? Or maybe he has extremely high expectations for himself. If so, the tips in the next section will be invaluable!<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/Quick_Guides\/6-Ways-To-Help-Your-Child-Read-Short-Stories-Quick-Guide.pdf\" title=\"Quick Guide for Phonological Awareness\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Quick-Guide-Short-Stories-596x165.png\" alt=\"Tips for Reading Short Stories Quick Guide Download\" width=\"500\" class=\"center\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n<h2>6 Ways to Help Your Child Read Short Stories<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>After you\u2019ve ruled out <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/signs-reading-problem\/\" title=\"Signs of a Reading Problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">underlying reading issues<\/a>, you can tackle the problem head-on. Whether you\u2019re using <cite>All About Reading<\/cite> or not, here are some suggestions:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AAR-Readers-Timer-100x100.png\" alt=\"yellow kitchen timer\" width=\"100\" class=\"left\" \/><p><span class=\"bold\">Set a timer.<\/span> Have your student read until the timer goes off. Choose the length of time according to your student\u2019s ability and attention span. You may need to start with a short time such as three minutes, and then gradually build up to ten minutes.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AAR-Readers-Bookmark-100x100.png\" alt=\"blue book with bookmark\" width=\"100\" class=\"left\" \/><p><span class=\"bold\">Divide the story into two or three parts.<\/span> Have your student read just one section in a sitting. Bookmark the page. At the next reading session, have your student listen as you reread the part he has already read, and then have him continue reading on his own.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<br \/>\r\n    <div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AAR-Readers-OpenReader-100x100.png\" alt=\"All About Reading decodable reader\" width=\"100\" class=\"left\" \/><p><span class=\"bold\">Reread<\/span>. Rereading stories from previous lessons will help your student gain fluency and confidence. During subsequent readings, your child will be \u201cwarmed up,\u201d allowing him to experience <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/reading-comprehension\/\" title=\"Reading Comprehension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">better comprehension<\/a> and helping him to enjoy the stories more.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AAR-Readers-BuddyReading-100x100.png\" alt=\"mom and child buddy reading\" width=\"100\" class=\"left\" \/><p><span class=\"bold\">Try <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/buddy-reading\/\" title=\"Buddy Reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buddy reading<\/a>.<\/span> Split up the reading duties by reading with your student. Alternate pages by reading a page yourself and then having your student read the next. For more practice, try buddy reading twice, switching pages each time, and then have your child read the story on his own.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AAR-Readers-WordCards-100x100.png\" alt=\"green AAR word cards\" width=\"100\" class=\"left\" \/><p><span class=\"bold\">Review.<\/span> The more familiar a child is with the words in a story, the easier it will be for him to read the story. So be sure to spend plenty of extra time reviewing words with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/review-word-cards\/\" title=\"flashcards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flashcards<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.allaboutlearningpress.com\/#activities\" title=\"activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">activities<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/practice-sheets\/\" title=\"16 Ways to Make Practice Sheets Fun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Practice Sheets<\/a> before reading the story.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<br \/>    \r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AAR-Readers-Ribbon-100x100.png\" alt=\"great job - blue ribbon \" width=\"100\" class=\"left\" \/><p><span class=\"bold\">Encourage your child.<\/span> Reading stories takes a lot of mental effort\u2014especially for kids who haven\u2019t yet developed <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/automaticity-in-reading-and-spelling\/\" title=\"automaticity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automaticity<\/a> (the ability to read the words without conscious thought). The other tips in this section will help as your child develops automaticity, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/encouraging-your-child\/\" title=\"Encouraging Your Child\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">be extra supportive<\/a>\u00a0in the meantime.<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Do you have a child who is struggling with the stories?
