But there is more to letter recognition than being able to sing the ABCs. You want your child to be able to pick out the individual letters and name them, and that\u2019s where the downloadable activities that follow really shine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Advantages of Learning the Letter Names<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Children who know the names of the letters have three major advantages:<\/p>\r\n    <ol>\r\n        <li>Kids who know letter names will learn the sounds of the letters much more easily. By contrast, children who <span class=\"italic\">don\u2019t<\/span> know the letter names often have tremendous difficulty in learning the sounds of the letters.<sup>1<\/sup><\/li>\r\n\r\n        <li>Children who can easily name the letters of the alphabet have an easier time learning to read.<sup>2, 3<\/sup><\/li>\r\n\r\n        <li>As they learn the letter names, children tend to be more motivated to discover more about the letters and about the words around them.<sup>4, 5, 6<\/sup><\/li>\r\n        <\/ol>\r\n\r\n<p>So you know that teaching the letter names is important, but now you may be wondering...<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Should Uppercase or Lowercase Letters Be Taught First?<\/h2>\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Teaching-Preschoolers-Dog-Looking-At-E-550x600-optimized.png\" alt=\"Puppy looking at letters E\" class=\"left\" width=\"300\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>Developmentally, it will be easier for your child to learn capital letters first. That\u2019s because the visual form of the capital letters is more distinct. Take a look at this row of capital letters:<\/p>\r\n    \r\n<h2>A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The only letters that could be flipped and mistaken for another letter are M\/W.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Now take a look at this row of lowercase letters:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z<\/h2><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>With the lowercase letters, there are several pairs of letters that could be flipped.<\/p>\r\n    \r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/GIF-with-transparency1.gif\" alt=\"Letter d morphing into letters b, p, and q\" class=\"right\" width=\"340\" \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n    <li>b\/d (flip on the vertical axis)<\/li>\r\n    <li>b\/p (flip on the horizontal axis)<\/li>\r\n    <li>d\/p (flip on the horizontal and vertical axis)<\/li>\r\n    <li>p\/q (flip on the vertical axis)<\/li>\r\n    <li>n\/u (flip on the horizontal and vertical axis)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p>So that's why I recommend starting with the \"easier\" uppercase letters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>But what about the fact that most text is composed of <span class=\"italic\">lower<\/span>case letters? After all, this sentence has 57 letters, and only <span class=\"italic\">one<\/span> of them is uppercase. Doesn't it stand to reason that kids should learn the lowercase letters first?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The fact is that your child will learn <span class=\"italic\">all<\/span> of the letters--<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/category\/abc-crafts-uppercase\/\" title=\"uppercase letter crafts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">uppercase<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/abc-crafts-lowercase\/\" title=\"lowercase letter crafts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lowercase<\/a>--before he learns to read. So why not start with the letter form that is easiest to learn?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Honestly though, it isn't critical. If you want to teach lowercase letters first, that is fine. Just be aware that some kids do mix up those letters mentioned above. (And here's help if your child already <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/letter-reversals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reverses similar letters such as \"b\" and \"d\"<\/a>.)
