In fact, you\u2019ve probably used your alphabetizing skills this past week without even realizing it. Maybe you looked up a friend\u2019s phone number in your contact list, or maybe you\u2019ve looked something up in a book index.<\/p><!--more-->\r\n\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/540x400-alphabetizing-recipe-box.png\" alt=\"recipe box with alphabetical dividers\" width=\"450\" class=\"right\" \/>\r\n<p>Here are some other common uses of alphabetized lists:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Finding a song<\/span> on a playlist arranged by artist\u2019s last name<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Locating a recipe<\/span> in a recipe box<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Filing a document<\/span> in a cabinet<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Using a map<\/span> for public transportation<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Locating a store<\/span> by using the mall directory<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Looking up information<\/span> in a textbook glossary<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Finding a book<\/span> on a library shelf<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">And MANY more!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>As you can see, alphabetizing is an essential literacy skill, and the resources in this post will make it easy for you to help your child master this important skill.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Let\u2019s dig in!<\/p>\r\n    \r\n<h2>Four Stages of Alphabetizing<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Children go through four stages when learning to alphabetize.<\/p>\r\n    \r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/4-stages-alphabetizing-600x450-1.png\" alt=\"the 4 stages of alphabetizing chart\" width=\"600\" class=\"center\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>Here are hands-on activities and tips for each stage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Stage 1: Put Letters in Order<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/ABC-Caterpillar.pdf\" title=\"ABC Caterpillar Download\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ABC-Caterpillar-Spread-Thumb-350x272-1.png\" alt=\"3-page spread of ABC Caterpillar activity download\" width=\"275\" class=\"left\" \/><\/a>\r\n<p>At this beginning stage, kids learn to arrange letters in A to Z order. You can use <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/using-letter-tiles\/\" title=\"Using Letter Tiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter tiles<\/a>, Scrabble tiles, or squares of paper, or you can <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/ABC-Caterpillar.pdf\" title=\"ABC Caterpillar Download\">download our free ABC Caterpillar activity<\/a>.<\/p>    \r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/ABC-Caterpillar.pdf\" title=\"ABC Caterpillar Download\"><h3>Play with Our Colorful Caterpillar<\/h3><\/a>\r\n    <p><a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/ABC-Caterpillar.pdf\" title=\"ABC Caterpillar Download\">This adorable hands-on activity<\/a> promotes letter recognition and builds pre-reading skills. And as an added bonus, you can use the letter cutouts from this activity for some of the additional activities described in the tips below!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Follow these tips to help reinforce Stage 1 alphabetizing skills:<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Work with your child to put the letter tiles in order at the beginning of each spelling or reading lesson.<\/li>\r\n<li>Sing the alphabet song together.<\/li>\r\n<li>Demonstrate how to start from different points in the alphabet. For example, lay out letter tiles A through M, and then have your child start the alphabet song from L and finish alphabetizing tiles N through Z.<\/li>\r\n<li>Hand your child the letter tiles in random order. Teach him that M and N are in the middle of the alphabet, so that when he gets those tiles he knows he should set them in the middle. As you hand your child each tile, he should decide if it is in the first half or the second half of the alphabet.<\/li>\r\n<li>Ask questions such as \u201cWhat letter comes after P?\u201d and \u201cIs H in the first half of the alphabet or the second half of the alphabet?\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<h2>Stage 2: Alphabetize to the First Letter<\/h2>\r\n    \r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/Blog_Samples\/AAR-L3-Sort-the-Seeds.pdf\" title=\"Sort the Seeds Download\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Sort-the-Seeds-Spread-Thumb-350x272-1.png\" alt=\"3-page spread of Sort the Seeds activity download\" width=\"275\" class=\"left\" \/><h3>Play \"Sort the Seeds\"<\/h3><\/a>\r\n\r\n<p>Once a child has mastered putting the letters in alphabetical order, teach him that <span class=\"italic\">words<\/span> can be alphabetized, too.<\/p>\r\n    \r\n<p>Sorting the seed packets <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/Blog_Samples\/AAR-L3-Sort-the-Seeds.pdf\" title=\"Sort the Seeds Download\">in this hands-on activity<\/a> from <cite>All About Reading<\/cite> Level 3 is a fun (and colorful!) way to practice alphabetizing words according to the first letter.<\/p><\/div>\r\n    \r\n<h2>Stage 3: Alphabetize to the Second and Third Letters<\/h2>\r\n \r\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/Blog_Samples\/AAR-L4-Whos-Coming-to-My-Party.pdf\" title=\"Who's Coming to My Party Download\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Whos-Coming-to-My-Party-Spread-Thumb-350x272-1.png\" alt=\"3-page spread of Who's Coming to My Party activity download\" width=\"275\" class=\"left\" \/><h3>Play \"Who's Coming to My Party?\"<\/h3><\/a>\r\n\r\n<p>In real-world applications, your child will come across multiple items that start with the same letter (for example, the names of children\u2019s authors <span class=\"italic\">Sendak<\/span>, <span class=\"italic\">Seuss<\/span>, and <span class=\"italic\">Silverstein<\/span>). The next step is to look at the second or third letter to alphabetize them correctly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Alphabetizing to the second and third letters can be tricky\u2014but not when you can play <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.allaboutlearningpress.com\/downloads\/Blog_Samples\/AAR-L4-Whos-Coming-to-My-Party.pdf\" title=\"Who's Coming to My Party Download\">\"Who's Coming to My Party?\"<\/a> from <cite>AAR<\/cite> Level 4.
