What Is a Prefix?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

A prefix<\/span> is a word part that is placed in front of a base word. Common prefixes include pre<\/span>, bi<\/span>, and anti<\/span>. Take a look at the examples below.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\"table\r\n\r\n

A prefix usually changes the meaning of the base word.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Think about the word happy<\/span>. The prefix un <\/span>placed in front of the word happy <\/span>makes a new word with a new meaning: unhappy<\/span>. The prefix un <\/span>means not<\/span> so it changes the meaning of the word happy <\/span>to not happy<\/span>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\"un\r\n\r\n

The Two Most Common Prefixes<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

The most common prefixes are un<\/span> and re<\/span>. These two prefixes are the most useful for beginning spellers to learn because they appear frequently and their meanings are easy to understand and remember.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Un<\/span> means not <\/span> (unhappy<\/span> = not happy<\/span>) or the reverse <\/span>of, or opposite <\/span>of (as in untie<\/span>).<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n

\r\n \"The\r\n

Re <\/span>means again <\/span>(redo <\/span>= do again<\/span>) or back <\/span>(as in repay<\/span>).<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n

Tips for Adding Prefixes<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

Tip 1: The spelling of the base word never changes.<\/span> Simply add the prefix to the beginning of the base word, as in the word tricycle<\/span>.<\/p>\r\n \r\n \"tri\r\n \r\n

Tip 2: Be aware that double letters can occur.<\/span> If you add the prefix un<\/span> to natural<\/span>, both the prefix and the base word retain their original spelling. The result is unnatural<\/span>.<\/p>\r\n \r\n \"un\r\n \r\n

Other examples where double letters occur include misspell<\/span>, irregular<\/span>, and unnoticeable<\/span>.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Tip 3: Watch out for prefix look-alikes.<\/span> Some words contain the same string of letters as a prefix, but upon closer examination you\u2019ll find that they are not prefixes. The re <\/span>in real <\/span>is not a prefix.<\/p>\r\n \r\n \"re\r\n \r\n

Other examples include\u00a0uncle<\/span>, pretty<\/span>, and interest<\/span>.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Tip 4: Sometimes a hyphen is needed.<\/span> If you are working with an older student, it is handy to know the six rules for adding prefixes found in the next section.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

6 Rules for Using Hyphens with Prefixes<\/h2>\r\n \r\n

A prefix is usually added directly to the base word, but there are several cases where a hyphen is needed.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Rule 1: Hyphenate the word when you add a prefix to a proper noun or a numeral.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \r\n \"hyphenated\r\n
\r\n

Rule 2: Hyphenate the word when you add the prefix ex<\/span> meaning former<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \r\n \"ex\r\n\r\n

(Do not use a hyphen if ex<\/span> means out of<\/span> or away from<\/span>, as in expel<\/span>.)<\/p>\r\n
\r\n\r\n

Rule 3: Hyphenate after the prefix self<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \r\n \"self\r\n
\r\n\r\n

Rule 4: Hyphenate to separate two A\u2019s, two I\u2019s, or other letter combinations that might cause misreading or mispronunciation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n \"hyphenated\r\n
\r\n\r\n

Rule 5: A hyphen may be used to separate two E\u2019s or two O\u2019s to improve readability or prevent mispronunciation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \r\n \"hyphenated\r\n\r\n

Note that many words with double E\u2019s used to be hyphenated as a general rule, as in re-elect<\/span>, re-establish<\/span>, and pre-existing<\/span>. However, current style manuals and dictionaries now tend toward \u201cclosing\u201d the word except in cases where readability is affected. Both versions are currently accepted and listed in most dictionaries.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Rule 6: A hyphen is sometimes used after the prefix re<\/span> to prevent misreading or confusion with another word.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \r\n \"hyphenated\r\n\r\n

As in \"Re-cover<\/span> the boat when you recover<\/span> from the flu.\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n \"hyphenated\r\n \r\n

As in \"Please relay<\/span> the message that they will re-lay<\/span> the tiles.\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n
