If you asked your child to tell you what she wants in a teacher, what would she say? Go ahead and ask \u2026 we\u2019ll wait!<\/p><!--more-->\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/teacher-your-child-needs-600x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"african american mother and daughter working on schoolwork together\" width=\"600\" class=\"center\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>If your child is like most, you probably heard things like \u201cgives me lots of recess\u201d or \u201cdoesn\u2019t make me do math.\u201d But if we were to take a poll of the characteristics that children <span class=\"italic\">really<\/span> appreciate in a teacher, we might also hear responses like these:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Is nice to me<\/li>\r\n<li>Doesn\u2019t yell<\/li>\r\n<li>Listens to me<\/li>\r\n<li>Cares about me<\/li>\r\n<li>Is excited when I get something right<\/li>\r\n<li>Is proud of me when I try<\/li>\r\n<li>Understands that <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/important-things-that-tests-cant-measure\/\" title=\"Tests Can't Measure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I'm not like everyone else<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li>Makes learning fun<\/li>\r\n    \r\n    <\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p>Did you notice that many of these qualities focus on the <span class=\"italic\">relationship<\/span> between teacher and student? Coupled with the fact that your homeschooled child lives with his teacher, the importance of a positive student-teacher relationship gains even greater significance. But in the ups and downs of the daily grind, we sometimes get so focused on teaching and \u201cimproving\u201d our kids that we forget to let them know how important they are to us and how much we believe in them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/dad-teaching-son-600x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"father and son learning together\" width=\"600\" class=\"center\" \/>\r\n\r\n<h2>Positive Encouragement Is Huge!<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>We all love working with people who bring out the best in us\u2014people who encourage us, lift us up, and motivate us to reach higher\u2014and your child is no different. Here are a few more ways that you can be what your child needs most in a teacher.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"large lilac split start\">\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Treat lesson time as special. <\/span><br \/>\r\nAs your child\u2019s teacher, you will spend many one-on-one hours with your child. Teaching is the perfect platform to show your child how much value he has in your eyes. What a great opportunity to encourage your child, build him up, and help him develop skills and character.<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Smile. <\/span><br \/>\r\nThink about what a difference a smile from your boss or coworker makes when you\u2019re feeling frustrated. To a discouraged child, a smile may communicate <em><span class=\"italic\">you can do it!<\/span><\/em> even better than words can.<\/li>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/mom-teaching-special-needs-son-600x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"boy having fun learning\" width=\"600\" class=\"center\" \/>\r\n\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Reinforce the positive. <\/span><br \/>\r\nPoint out the things your student does correctly more often than you point out his mistakes. The more you reinforce something, the more likely your child is to repeat it. Just follow the basic principles on the graphic below.<\/li>\r\n    \r\n    <\/ol>\r\n    \r\n   <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Be-the-Teacher-Principles-600x379.png\" alt=\"list of 5 principles for reinforcing the positive\" width=\"600\" class=\"center\" \/>\r\n    \r\n<ol class=\"large lilac split\">\r\n\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Avoid comparing your child. <\/span><br \/>\r\nThe temptation to compare your child to another child, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/important-things-that-tests-cant-measure\/\" title=\"Tests Can't Measure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to a test result<\/a>, or even to your ideal outcome is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.allaboutlearningpress.com\/the-big-pit\/\" title=\"The Big Pit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">big pit<\/a>\u201d that puts pressure on your child and usually leads to frustration and discouragement.<\/li>\r\n    \r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Listen to your child. <\/span><br \/>\r\nAttentive listening lets your child know you are engaged and present in the conversation, and a child who knows he is heard and understood feels valued.<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li><span class=\"bold\">Listen to yourself. <\/span><br \/>\r\nBut don\u2019t just listen \u2026 listen through your <span class=\"italic\">child's<\/span> ears.
